"Originally trained as a musician, I have been struck by the similarities between music and photography, pursuing the latter in recent years. Both exist in the subtle nuances of light, reflecting the heart of human experience; sometimes seen, sometimes only felt; sometimes joyous, sometimes painful. Pictured in this photograph are the feelings of warmth, joy and silliness of a boy participating in a Canada Day celebration. I named it Marcel Marceau as it brought the image of the French mime to me. It is the face of a changing Canada with a greater diversity of population than it has ever before experienced. My own children, born of European ancestry, are now visible minorities in their classes. Yet they don’t see this. This picture is a reminder of a universal truth that there can be no simpler joy for a parent than to see his child happy and content. I hope to be able to recognize and celebrate these universals in and with all I meet, to be able to see as my children see with no visible differences among people."
