Digital artwork about homelessness and poverty

"With this image of the many faces of homelessness, I wanted to show that “homeless” doesn’t always mean the same thing. Sometimes people have been born into poverty, like the child in the refugee camp, and would be lucky to get a home. Other people have had their homes destroyed, like the woman and her babies, whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. I decided that showing all the people together was more effective than an animation changing between faces, for 3 reasons:

  1. Showing all the faces at once implies the scale of homelessness.
  2. Fading from face to face implies that there are not many homeless people, and they are only homeless for a short while.
  3. Showing the people in a still image allows more time to contemplate each picture.

This image is interesting because it shows the human element of homelessness, but it also has a graph that shows how many people are homeless. I think it’s sad that the graph has increased so quickly. However, the graph levels off, which gives me hope that it can start to move down again. I want to increase awareness about how much the graph has gone up lately, and hopefully bring the numbers down again."
