Access to Safe Water: Is it a problem in Canada?

In many developing countries, a lack of safe drinking water affects the quality of life of millions of people. Did you know that safe water is also a problem in Canada? Who do you think is at risk?

You don't have to go far to see the importance of safe drinking water. Did you know that according to CBC news in 2006,

  • Two-thirds of drinking water in Aboriginal communities in Canada remains "at risk," compared to three-quarters of all such communities in 2001. In other words... the problem is getting worse!

  • Sixty-two per cent of water-system operators in Canadian aboriginal communities aren't properly certified.

  • Seventy-six reserves have to boil their water in order to drink it? Some residents say that the water is even too dirty even for bathing! Yuck!
